Like many of you I am married, but also, like many of you, I am still a Mama’s boy at heart. This year for Christmas, like many of you, I decided to make gifts. One of the gifts I wanted to make was a jewelry box for my mom.

A while back I googled “unique box joints” and saw a picture of a box where the sides were laminated in contrasting woods making a cool pattern when cut with box joints. I have wanted to use that technique ever since and decided it would be perfect for a jewelery box. I originally wanted to use maple and walnut but decided to use a cheaper wood in case I stumbled across some unforeseen issue with the box joints or didn’t like the look of the joint after finishing.

The Pine is box store 2×10’s that I resawed and planed to ¼”. I got the cedar from a pack of closet lining boards that were milled on one face and rough on another, just slightly thicker than ¼”.

All in all I am pretty pleased with this and will definitely make another in the future. This was a fun way to experiment with a new technique and will hopefully make a nice gift for my mom.

Approx 11”x7”x3”
