In 2005, I designed, built and named this chair after my great grand father, Severino Reyes ( 1861- 1942). As a story teller and a play wright, He used “Lola Basyang” as his pen name.
The back splats are stack laminated- steambent dao and goes through the seat to function as the back legs of the chair. The Crown is made from molave while the Seat, arm rests and horse shoe base is of Ipil. The front legs and stretchers are all in Yakal. All dowels are in Ebony. I always picture My Great Grandpa on this chair telling stories to dozens of children sitting on the floor around him.

Benji,
A beautiful testiment to your Great Grandfather. I’m sure countless children were educated and entertained by his stories that enriched their lives. Nice job on the design and the build.

Magaling totoo! You’ve done a great collection of chairs and this is one of favorites. I’d like to stop by and see your studio the next time I’m in the PI (Asawa ko ay taga sa San Pablo, Laguna)

Each one seems as good or even better than the last one Benji. I hope you will show us a picture of where you work sometime.

Very cool chair! I’m sure that your grandfather is proud. The way you have upper and lower splats makes it look like a reflection to me.

What a wonderful story this is to the creation to this chair. Do you have any of your grandfather’s stories documented? I think a short story engraved in the chair would also be a symbolic touch.
