The July 2011 issue of Wood Magazine has a 2-page pattern for a criss-cross clock. The same plan and clock movement can be purchased here.
Why is it when the plans say it is a simple project, it is never simple?
The plans call for using a standard birch 5/8” birch dowel for the 4 color accents. When I got done, my birch dowel gave almost no color contrast to the cherry main clock piece. The strips are walnut.
So, I carefully chiseled out the birch dowels, and replaced them with 4 small pieces of yellow heart wood. I like this color contrast much better. Red padauk would work well also.
I also learned that carbide router bits do finally go dull, and should be replaced when dull. I was routing the center 3-1/8” hole using a pattern with a worn out flush trim router bit. The dull bit hit the end grain, and really kicked the clock body against my hand. No injury thank goodness. I threw that bit away and bought a new one.
You can see my Trials & Tribulations on my woodworking web site.
Thanks

Well, despite all the mayhem in its construction, this is a fine looking clock!

Looks great!!!
Nothing I have ever made goes as I have planned it before I walked into the shop. Drawn out, worked out on the laptop, makes no difference Murphy always shows up…. LOL

I really like the look of this clock; nice work.
On another note, Wood Magazine might not appreciate that you posted their full copyrighted plan on your web site.

Good point on the copyright, I took the 2nd page down…...so only intro to the article page is left.
