Hi Everyone,
In FWW issue #255, Michael Cullen wrote an article on how to make a small mitered pen/pencil box with very thin parts. I think the best advise he gives is to go very slow with the milling process to ensure that the thin parts stay straight.
Yeah… I probably should have listened a bit more to that part. Mid glue-up I definitely realized that the long pieces had curled a bit but overall it came together all right. Anyway, full disclosure: My mitered top does not perfectly line up when closed :)
Still a nice box, I’m going to probably make a bunch of these for holiday gifts.
(box carcass is made from rift-sawn hemlock, lid is maple and the keys are purple heart.)

Nice work. How are you making your miters? If you do not have a miter sled this would help greatly. Alot of videos and examples here on the site.

I did the miters on a makita miter saw. Still was not perfect, I probably need to adjust the machine.
