These boxes were made as remembrances from my family’s trip to Kauai.
The tops are made from koa wood purchased during our vacation. First time I packed wood in a suitcase to bring home! The inset ceramic tiles feature Hawaian flowers … an orchid on one, plumeria on the other.
I actually purchased the wood having no idea what I was going to do with it … which I don’t recommend. Still have a couple of pieces in the shop waiting for the next idea. I’ll be better prepared next time I go to Hawaii, so that I can buy native wood for the “right” project, in the right sizes and figure!
The box sides and bottoms are made from figured maple, but the maple doesn’t compare to the beauty of the koa!
Finish is many coats of tung oil, with each coat smoothed with steel wool before the next coat.
Based on a design published in Wood magazine, November 2006.
