Project Information

I had never heard of Popcorn Sapele before. But that is what he told me.
When my brother came up from South Carloina last week he had been to his local Woodcraft store and picked it up. A small box like this does not look as nice as the whole board did.
Toby worked with me to make this for him, and I get to keep what is left of the small board. He also left two other used boards that will be seen later.
Danish oil and wax for the finish.

Thanks for looking, Nick

Very nice. I really like the base. Basic question on that - what tool do you use to create the unique shape?

Hi BB1,
I use a band saw (Delta 14" with 1/4" blade) to cut it and my belt sander to take out all the marks. On the short end my can of wax is the right size for the arc and on the front I try to strike an arc that leaves about the same amount of wood for the little foot. Every box is a little different size because I just go by what I can get out of the board I have.

Thanks…was thinking it was done on a bandsaw. Another tool for my wishlist.

Great job! I love the contrasting woods. I too have never heard of popcorn sapele … I have always known this to be pomelle figure.

I was given that name, and the wood by my brother. He could have given me an incorrect name for the wood.

Looks good. I agree that they probably meant pomelle Sapele.

Nick, very nice box. I love the colors of this box, and especially love how you contoured the bottom. Great idea which really catches the eye!

Our woodshop uses an amazing amount of sapele, we have only run across one piece of pomelli in ten years and it was amazing from one end to the other. I wish I could find a consistent supply of it but it seems rate

Minwax, I have both natural and the dark. I really don't see any difference when I use them, but this was the natural.
