Butterfly Bandsaw Jewelry Box

I made this bandsaw box as an “experiment”, using only wood that was in my scrap bin. Each layer was made of 2 or 3 pieces that I edge jointed, glued together, and then thickness planed, with no two having the same shape or thickness when the “stack” was glued up. In order to have the overall shape symmetrical, I made a template of one half the butterfly, and I flipped it over when I drew the outline on the stack. The drawers were simply done freehand at the bandsaw. I used brown flocking in the drawers and Minwax Wipe On poly to finish it.

After posting this project I decided to change from the original knobs to the smaller gold ones in the last two photos.

Thank you all for the kind comments.

@wncguy… I cannot take credit for the design, as it is very similar to one that I saw online. My “variation” was that I did the drawers “freehand”, so that they are not symmetrical, and I did make a few other, relatively minor, changes. As I said, it was an “experiment” in gluing up and using hardwood scraps that were, otherwise, destined to be tossed. In view of the symmetry, I was able to hide the glue line on the front of the box by making it the centerline of the butterfly, so it corresponded to the bandsaw cut line.

I wish my experiments came out this well! :)

@fivecodys… As R. Buckminster Fuller said, “There is no such thing as a failed experiment, only experiments with unexpected results.”, or as Thomas Edison said, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

In my case, I simply don’t publish the ways that didn’t work out well, or the unexpected results, although, given that the “expected” result for the scrap used in this “experiment” would have been that it was to be dumped, maybe this box was actually the “unexpected result”.

Anyway, thank you for your kind comment.

I think that it is stunning, I love the shape and contrast.
Great work Sandy.
I too, wish my experiments worked as well. Although saying that, I have had the odd one work out pretty well.
Thank you for sharing.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

As one who always shied away from making boxes, I am very thankful for all the kind comments as well as appreciative of the second “Daily Top Three” from the Editors this month (the first was for ””Alexa’s Jewelry Box””:
