This is a record chest I built as a commission for a friend. It’s made of black walnut, with padauk and maple accent woods.
The hand-shaped tops took the longest time. They were something I added in after I started the build, to match the overall look of the piece. (see original drawing above- those shaped tops were not included!)
Looking back I had no idea I’d be able to make the tops look this good. They took DAYS of shaping. All from 8/4 walnut slabs I glued together, trying to use minimum sapwood and defects.
I shaped the tops with gouges, scrapers, sandpaper, and planes… including my radius Hock plane I built with some beech I have.
This took 4 months, from initial drawing to delivered. Original drawing is included above.

Thanks Garry! No Pics with it open at the moment… The bottom of the cabinet is Baltic birch plywood, looks good being a contrasting wood inside.
