This is a handmade wooden mallet made of Malaysian hardwood Red Meranti. The handle is from Balou another Malaysian hardwood.
It was a ton of fun to make – the only power tool i used was a drill.
I cut all the pieces with my hand saw. Used clamps to glue it and sanded it down with rasps & sandpaper. I shaped the handle with rasps. Finished off the bottom of the head with a circular piece of leather to cover the transition & label it.
The black lacing is leather.
Finish is simply boiled lindeed oil, which really brought out the red color of both wood species.
I gave this as a gift to my friends son, who was starting work as a carpenter….

That is a great looking mallet! Heck of a gift! I’m sure that your friend’s son will appreciate it.
