Project Information

Hey LumberJockers!

Its been a while since I posted anything so I thought Id share one of my summer projects with ya!

This is a Brigham inspired bed made from American Walnut and Birdseye Maple. The headboard was obviously the most time consuming part of the project. The curved boards are laminated to a piece of 3/4" plywood, and I carved them with a Kutzal head on a 5" makita grinder, Festool RAS, and a 6" rotex. After the glue set up I mitered the corners of the headboard and reinforced them with dominos to make it look like it was 5" thick. After that I routed out a dado for the cantilevered side tables to fit into.

As for the rest of the bed I was thinking of building a platform bed but decided to make a cross between a traditional and platform bed. So there is a footboard and side boards but they stick up just a bit.

After I sanded the whole thing to 600Grit I added several coats of Maloof oil and a final coat of Festool's Suffix oil and buffed it.

Thanks for lookin!

Zack

Zack, that headboard is fantastic, out of this world. I like the mitered headboard, nice thick appearance. Great work on the carving too.

Nice work!

Is the bed so big, that you have to build the building around it?

That's a mighty impressive headboard. Guess you have to build a big bedroom around that bed now. Looking forward to seeing that.

Gorgeous bed. It reminds me a lot of a Jory Brigham design.

Great job! Love your interpretation of the style. That headboard reminds me of the waving wheat fields near my grandma's home in Hoisington. (Waiting for you to really blow my mind and say that there are hidden storage compartments in the headboard.) Thanks for posting.

Aren't you afraid of getting caught in the rain?
I love that headboard, in fact I like the entire design.
Very nice design and implementation.

As always thanks for the kind words everyone!

leafherder- there's actually some shelving in the back of the headboard (which will probably never be used but its there nonetheless)

Phillip- its actually based off of Jory's organic bed (obviously his work is a bit out of my league but I have definitely been on a jory brigham kick lately)

Paul- Its actually a commissioned piece but the wife has plans for a new house and wants one in there. So when that happens I think that will go in before the walls go up.

Well I think it's awesome looking. I'd kill for that to come out of my shop. I'm currently working on a carved panel for a a fireplace screen. It is my practice for my own headboard for our new bed.
