Entry bench is made of popular with mortise and tenon joinery for panels to legs and stretchers to legs. Panels are 1/4 inch birch plywood with popular rails. 1/4” plywood is two 1/8” plywood pieces glued together, good sides out. The two top pieces, either side of the lid, are attached using split dowel (small wedge in split) joinery with blind holes in the underside of the lids. Driving the lids into position expanded the dowels in the blind holes locking the lids into place. A piano hinge attaches the opening lid.

Finish is simply black spray paint with a clear coat of spray lacquer and a coat of Johnson’s paste wax. It has a surprisingly good piano type like finish. Who’d a thunk?

I built this for my step-son and his wife and 2 kids and a dog. It has sat at there front door for a year and a half. The finish has stood the test of time and family very well. I figured some touch up would be needed on occasion but despite a couple dents and scratches the finish has been very durable. Structurally it is solid as a rock.

I was very pleased with this low cost, high gratification project.

Clean design. I bet it fits in nicely.

Nice, looks like there should be a piano in front of it.

Nice job and very nice finish. I like it very much. Even if Asian, it looks Traditional as well. I learned from you today! Thanks a lot for posting it.
