Claire (13) and I built this night stand for her room earlier this Summer.
I did most of the carcase construction, and she helped make the drawer and paint the carcase.
The top and false drawer front are Red Oak from H D. Top is glued-up and joined with biscuits.
The carcase is whitewood, and the drawer bottom is 1/4 inch Red Oak ply.
Finish on the top and drawer front is 4 coats Minwax Polyshades Golden Oak, rubbed with 4/0 steel wool. Carcase finish is Rust-Oleum Chalk White.

New skills: Claire learned pocket hole joinery, masking, and spray painting. Grandpa learned euro-style drawer slide installation and card scraping.

The design is from Ana White’s book on simple home furniture building.

Claire learned her spray painting the hard way. First coat, advised by her Dad, did not turn out well, she hated it, and did not want it in her room. Dad said sand it lightly all over and add 2 more coats. She did and she’s proud of her work. It’s in her room and looks good with the rest of her furniture.
