My nephew Mark, who is a silviculturist working out of Penticton, B.C., found this Yew stump while doing some brush cleaning on one of his jobs. He decided that I needed a challenge so this wonderful contorted piece of wood landed on my doorstep. I trimmed the log to square it off and split it in two. The first pieces of the trimming were immediately cut into three ‘boot’ blanks, and away I went, making saw dust. The TREE AMIGOS soon came into existence.
Luckily for me I had my dust mask and dust removal system in operation as the Yew is quite toxic. But I am writing this. so I survived!
In addition to it’s convoluted growing pattern, the wood has a great variety of colour. All these characteristics are evident in the sculptures.
YEW, YEW, YEW, I belong to you, you, you….........!
Now I can’t get the song out of my head.
Anyways, do enjoy the boots and sing along with me!

I used to use a fair bit of Pacific Yew years ago….. amazing wood.
As you say the colours are varied and the grain is often very figured.
When green you can drive nails into it. When it seasons, not only can’t you get the nails out but you can’t get any more in. .... interesting stuff.
Of course the boots are wonderful bits of artistic fancy as is your way.
You always give me a smile.
Thanks Roman.

The YEW tree is an evergreen that produces red berries. It is native to central and southern Europe. northern Iran. Scientific name is Taxus baccata and has alkaloids that are harmful to humans. Some English yews are reported to have lived over 4000 years.
