This grain reminds me of a tiger and waterfall hence the title .
Just a beautiful figured board of Sapele which just had to be a box and was just the right size .
This box is made from a single piece of sapele veneer that came into my shop as a piece of engineered flooring which had a 3/16” top veneer and walnut trim.
I band sawed the veneer off the plywood core and laminated it to a piece of Baltic birch ply with a maple veneer as a backing veneer.
The two drawers are made from hickory and ride on wooden slides milled into the sides .
The size turned out a bit larger then what I normally make but I wanted to use every bit of this beautiful piece .
The interior is lined with a heavy velvet cloth and the hinges are solid brass .
The overall size is 13 1/2” W x 10” D x 6 1/4” H and all the angles are seven degree and this gave the box a good overall stance and pleasing appearance .The drawer pulls are ebonized walnut and doweled to the drawer fronts .
The box is finished with BLO and clear spray lacquer polished out and a coat of wax which gave it satin and smooth finish .
Questions and comments always welcome .
Klaus

Klaus, that is a beautiful piece of figured Sapele. I can see what triggered you into making it a box. I’m surprised you cut off the veneer and re laminated it to the birch ply. Was it too unstable for the panel edges?

Thanks John
Always nice to hear your comment .

I don’t like to remove the finish so I glued the finished side to the plywood and sanded the sawn side smooth besides the finish on flooring is a very poor looking finish and not suitable for a box finish .

Kiefer,
It’s definitely a Klaus Kiefer design. This is a guy box. I can see you putting your calipers and micrometers in this. I like the color and pattern match. Tone on tone. I’ll never catch up cause you keep raising the bar for the rest of us.

Beautiful box, Klaus…..the sapele is spectacular and plays well against the walnut. The soft yellow velvet is a nice touch, as well. You did justice to the beauty of the wood.

Yes I agree it is a guy’ box but not that difficult to build just the corners which are a compound angle .
It’s the beautiful grain that got me inspired and working with the size of the material was a challenge , one wrong cut and Murphy would have had it his way .

I guess I should of known. I have hundreds of pieces of solid bamboo flooring. Trying to remove the urethane finish is a hassle. So I put the top finished side in the inside of projects like you and plane and sand the bottom for a new finish on the outside.

There is a lot of left over flooring to be had at a very reasonable cost and many pieces with beautiful grain and color .The drawers turned out well and are a very simple design without a double front and slide and fit extremely well .

Klaus,
Murphy’s down here helping me with my box. LOL! I’ve screwed it up and fixed the screw up every step of the way! How big is your bandsaw?

Dave
Never sand the finish of I have been told by a flooring expert as it contains aluminum oxide which is a real health hazard .
