I was wanting a tail vise for a while now. You can see the change in wood colour from the new addition. The majority is made of pine 2×4, but the screw, and nut are made from bradford pear. The Bradford Pear works really good for threads, I have a BP screw on my leg vise and it has held up really well. I just used a 1.5” wood threading kit from Grizzly or WoodCraft, can’t rememmber where I got it from. It clamps really tight, I can lift my bench before the workpiece comes out. The dogs are made from Pine with hickory springs. The addition has caused my bench to be a little offset, but it doesn’t really bother me too much. I used to have a tool tray in the middle, now there is just room for a 2×4, witch is great because i can lift it up for a planning stop, I don’t think I will miss the tray. It seemed to be more of a shaving catcher than anything, plus when I was planning down wide boards i would have to find something to fill the hole. I don’t think I’m going to miss the tool tray.

I bet, you will see the offset as a plus some day. So this bench will serve you well.

That is a monster screw, I just ordered the same threader and have yet to use it. I was going to use it to hold down my chair plank, but used a 3/4” thread instead so it would fit thru a dog hole. That vise looks like it is going to be very useful. I like those monster bench dogs too, bet they hold well.
