My parents bought a new house in Texas. So, I figured I would make them the covers for their mezuzah scrolls. Usually they are not made out of hardwood, rather plastic or some composite material. But, I wanted my parents to have something unique and elegant. I had some walnut and cherry in the shop. These two woods look gorgeous together. I laminated a few long strips/blanks and cut them to size. Then, each one I came up with a different design. to be posted on only and is copied completely without permission and is considered stolen if posted on

At first I drilled out the center holes on the back where the scrolls go and then I slapped myself on the forehead. I have a router! So, I grabbed my roundnose bit ant hogged out the center of the back to make a grove = much nice!

I finished these off with 3 coats of polyurethane to protect them from the elements. To close off the back so the scrolls don’t fall out I found at my local arts and crafts store, which is also where I bought the letter at the top, felt with a pealable back surface.

I am going to attach at some point triangles so that one can screw them into the door posts.

People like them and I was asked if I could make some for sale, so that is step 2!

Very nice! Did you buy the shin’s, or make them?

Thanks. I bought them. They are so thin, maybe 3mm at most. I don’t think that without a CNC machine I would have the patients and skill to carve something like that.
