Project Information

Though not really a woodworking project of the quality shown on this website. I figured I'd jump in and show you the first canoe sailing rig I made.

The boy and I are on Forked Lake in the Adirondacks and hoping to ride some wind. We got her up to 6.8 mph (by GPS) on Forked Lk but the wind was not kind to us on Long Lake. I am the Pirate and quite naturally the Captain. Boy did not want to bring a bandana so as to complete the pirate motif.

The rig was burned for firewood at the end of Long Lake so as not to have to hump her over the Raquette River Falls Carry.

We improved on her later with another rig.

Looks like fun. Did it make the canoe tippy?

Luckily we had the wind at our backs when going fast(believe me 6.8 MPH feels much faster than it is) so we were ok. "sailing " beats paddling any day.

Versoin 2 on a different body of water we made it one length of the canoe before going over.

Just like Lewis and Clark.. .. burn it/bury it rather than portage what you can build (or hope you can rebuild) further up the river. Looks like you had a great time with the kids! Arrrrrrrrrr keep it up captain.
