Rockler was having a sale on 1×1x12 Bocote blanks for $1! So I bought one. In fact, other than purchasing the wood for my lathe stand, this was my first wood purchase related to turning. Everything else had been salvaged.

Russian spindles are unique in the YARN MAKING SPINDLE world in that they are little more than a pointy stick. Unlike the balanced whorl drop-spindle, the Russian spindle is very straightforward and a quick turn.

I was impatient, so I didn’t get fancy with this one. I hurried along with it because I’ve never spun with a Russian spindle and I wanted to try it out before the sun went down on me.

And here it is! And I’m super frustrated because (at only 1 hour spinning) am not the greatest spinner with this kind of “off the top” spinning technique. HA!
