This was a project completed for a game my wife and I play called Quarriors. We wanted to keep the game more organized and customize our experience, so I designed and built some simple dice trays.

Because we wanted to use them this weekend, we defaulted to a base wooden tray purchased from Michael’s craft store. We then used small slats of hobby wood to divide the tray into sections. I created an elevated dice pedestal in the upper right corner of the box to make the dice more visible to opponents in the game, and to facilitate ease of moving the dice around. The pedestal was made of small 3/4 inch blocks topped with a hobby slat. To further organize the dice I used leftover scraps of the wooden slats and trimmed them down to act as rails to allow the dice to “seat” into the pedestal. Then, to finish off the tray I lined the bottom of each compartment with purple felt.

The trays will become part of a set to house the game, which will be made at a later date. The theme of the trays and the soon to be built game box will be in the spirit of the show Warehouse 13. If you are a fan of the show, you will appreciate the use of purple, suggested by my wife, that is used to neutralize the “artifacts” in the show.

Total time spent on the project was approximately 2-3 hours, and total cost per tray was approximately $12.

That’s a good one. I’ve got plans to make some boxes to house a few of my games, so I look forward to your set solution.
