For Christmas, my wife gifted me a box of Koa scraps that she found on eBay. I am always on the lookout for beautiful and unusual woods to add to the 20+ species I already carry to produce my woodstuffs. Although the batch she got me was not enough to go add to my retail arsenal, it has given me the opportunity to work with it a bit. I did these for her and a couple of special friends, with a reserve for any special small projects that might scream for a touch of Hawaii.
I can see why it is prized by craftsmen. This Koa is is akin to rosewood in hardness and workability and finishes beautifully with a few coats of clear lacquer, popping out a lustrous reddish grain that changes with the source of light.
If anyone reading this has a supply of this wood in their garage and would like to swap it for some of my work, please contact me. Email a photo of what you have (and sizes) to [email protected] and I will get right back to you.
I would also be interested in trading my work for any other unusual or fancy wood scraps that you may have lying about.

Koa is an amazing wood to use. I’ve turned a lot of pens from Koa. The variety of colors is amazing…
Sending you an email.
