This is a mosaic of different types of wood that I made for the Shop Art Swap. The pieces were glued together to make four rectangular blocks and then the blocks were glued to the plywood backing. Once everything was glued together, I finished it with a mixture of bees wax and mineral oil that I use on bowls, etc. The finish allowed the natural color of the different types of wood to show. I then but a frame around the mosaic.
One thing I learned along the way was that while the contrast between the light colored wood like polar looked good next to the darker woods like paduak or bloodwood, it was very easy to accidentally pick up a little sanding dust from the darker wood on your hands and get it on the lighter wood, causing a stain. Even though I had sanded the pieces before putting them together, I learned that it took a bit of extra care.

Very nice; I love the contrasts between the different species of wood. Reminds me of a tray I made a while back. Believe me when I say I understand the difficulty in getting all those pieces to fit together well!
