We wanted a shelf and some hooks in the entryway to our house to place keys etc. I wanted to keep it fairly minimal so ended up using two lengths of pine board rabbeted in to each other at right angles. I achieved this using a chisel as a Poor Man's Router a la Paul Sellers.

I used oak dowels that I allowed to protrude through the back slightly to give an angle to the shelf. I planed the corresponding angle on to the edges of the two boards so that it would appear square to the wall/floor. I hung it on the wall using picture hangers countersunk into the back (not pictured).

Nice looking shelf and area for hanging items.
