Project Information

I made this bookshelf for my wife for christmas last year, finally found the pictures on my phone. This was an exciting project for me because almost all of it was done with hand tools, the legs are Spalted Oak and the shelves are made from Rock Maple. The shelf weighs in at close to 60 pounds. I used a draw knife to take off all the bark from the legs and hand sanded them to keep the rustic look. I built the shelves using biscuits and added a piece along the entire edge to make it look somewhat seamless. The hardest part of this project for me was cutting the dados into the legs to make each shelf level, because none of the legs were truly straight it took some practice. All the cutting was done with hand saws and chisels, I am sure there is a better way but I knew if I tried power tools I would screw it up! I finished it off using about 6 coats of danish oil, and I am very happy with it.

More importantly She loved it!

Thanks for checking it out,

Matt
