I got this idea from Captain Eddie Castelin (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdchP8ZYUCc) for this great tool.

Basically all you need is a hardened piece of steel and that’s what edger blades are !

So scrap the paint of the blade, cut it with a grinder or a hacksaw, grind the tip to the profile you want, epoxy some wood for the handle et voila.

Tried it on pens and bowls and it works wonderful.

Eddie, if you see this post, thank a lot for the great tip !

That’s pretty cool, I made one out of an old jointer knife.

I’ve been experimenting with making various profile lathe tools….some are success…and some are dismall failures…but all in all it helps me develop different techniques. I would also suggest using a peice of pipe to make the handles longer and heavier…I keep a bag of shot to put some in the pipe (with epoxy so they don’t rattle – this has put some real weight on some of the v cutters and a couple of hollowers I am working on…..I like the extra weigh on the roughing cuters, gouges and hollowers.

You can also find HSS or Carbon cutters in various shapes and sizes…you and even have the shop shape them for your needs….just run a search and you will find tons of em (and not very expensive).
