This was a Christmas gift for my wife this year. Mahogany and maple with Watco danish oil finish, then buffed with a Beall buff.

Ideas are cooking after seeing this. One could make the squares with 2 tails and 2 pins on each. Then they could connect in various ways to make different shapes instead of just a straight line. I would think a square instead of a rectangle would be a better way to go using this idea to allow more designs to fit together. Plus all of the squares as well as the pins & tails would have to be nearly identical in order for everything to randomly fit together properly.
Great, now you just added something to my list of things to try….....thanks?????

Well done.

Thanks. I was thinking about making a set of nine like that, but was concerned that they might look a little “busy”. Another minor point would be that, in my design, the top surface would be end grain, as I had thought about slicing them all out of a long dovetailed “log”. Go for it. I would love to see how it looks, as well as see another way of doing it.

Picklehead, a really neat idea well executed.
I have made loads of these holders from my “Scrap Pile” and they are
always a great gift, have also sold plenty.
