My very first project, completed under the watchful supervision of a woodworking coworker. I had admired some of the furniture he’d built and asked him probably the same question many of you have heard: “How much would it cost to have you build me something like that”. His response was that I should just decide what I wanted, come up with a drawing and he’d help me build it.. so I did. That was back in 2004 and many, MANY dollars worth of woodworking tools later. Good times though. I remember burning out my first random orbit sander (in two days!), chewing the heck out of 1/2” plywood with a dovetail jig and a dull router blade and the panic I felt when using a dado blade for the first time (or three!). Birdseye maple front and top with birch plywood sides.

Nice work, especially on book matching the grain on front.

Thank you. I would like to point out that I was closely supervised during this project by someone with experience.. oh, and a fair amount of patience. I didn’t just fly solo out of the gate but I am thankful for him sparking my interest in making high quality sawdust.

I think WE have all made one of those file cabinets in our woodworking career. I made one in 1976 coming out of cabinet school. My Brother moved out of his house last summer, had a yard sale, there was my file cabinet looking as good as it did when I built it. He got $50 for it.
