This sapele mahogany bookcase has ebony plugs in the top rail. It has a giraffe motif that I painted on the side for the customer who loved giraffes. Finished with oil/varnish. The picture was done is a way that I have used to etch glass patterns. I use a roll of clear drawer liner and stick it to the wood than I can use a permanent marker to draw out my idea. When I have it the way I want I use an exacto knife to cut away the part I want to paint and then spay the paint on an peel off the leftover to reveal the design. A few coats of clear varnish seal it in place and protect it.
