I made this mirror out of one pallet and the mirror from an old plastic medicine cabinet mirror that one of my neighbors threw away after remodeling. The horizontal boards are attached to a 1/4” sheet of plywood. Their are two frames, one on the outside of the piece and one that frames just the mirror. I put a piece of 0000 steel wool in a jar of apple cider vinegar for about a day and a half and dry brushed that on for the finish to give it a rustic look. I used a French cleat to attach it to the wall.

I love it! Looks great! Dismantling pallets is terrible work. I had never heard of the steel wool trick and will try it on my next project.

Todd – Yeah I was very happy with how that finish turned out. It was the second time I’d tried that and this time turned out much better. The dry brushing is what did the trick. If I remember right, I left the 0000 steel wool in the apple cider vinegar for about a day and a half before I used it.

OK – straight up this actually looks pretty good. I am not impressed with most pallet wood projects, but this one turned out good.
The proportions are cool and the arrangement of the boards (which is the material interpretation) is well done. I think you hit the sweet spot of contemporary-rustic.
Nice job!

Thanks for the positive feedback Todd. For not having an initial plan, other than wanting to make a mirror that combined the pallet and the mirror, I was very happy with how it turned out.
Have your say...
