For several years my router table was also part of my table saw. Everytime I had to use the router table, I had to take down all my table saw settings and if I had to use the table saw later, I have to reverse everything. While I didn’t mind the extra set up time of these tools, I found it difficult to duplicate the exact settings from before the switch. So I decided to have a dedicated router table and a new fence.
My router table top is made from a section of a solid core door and I came across the plan of a router table fence in an old issue (Nov 2004) of Wood Magazine. This fence has many desirable features and accessories so I decided to make one.
I found a 12”x48” white laminated shelf in a local home center for $2.99 and I thought it would be an excellent surface for the fence. There are 4 segmented faces (middle and lower) in the front which can be independently adjusted for router bits of different sizes and heights. A T-track was placed in the top face to allow accessories attachments. A 2” dust collection port in the back keeping the router table top clean and dust free (almost).
Because I don’t have a jointer so I made an extra right lower face but slightly thinner (about 1/16”) than the left. With a straight router bit, I can use my fence as a jointer! I also made two stopblocks and a feather board for better and precise cuts.
My new router table and router table fence sure cut down my project time and I can switch back and forth between my router table and table saw without changing any of the critical settings.
Thanks for looking!

Simon, this is a nice router table and fence. But I think the fence is really what makes this a top notch project. It makes these two a versatile combination that add a nice tool to your shop.

Nice fence, I like the idea of using it as a jointer.

I’ve been looking for a good plan for a fence. I’m pretty sure I have that issue, so looks like I’ll have one soon enough. Thanks for the post! Great looking table and fence.

You did a great job. That article is still, imho, is the best home built fence out there.
I found when I made it, however, using the same material you did, a mdf covered shelf from home depot, that the shelf had different thickness’s across the width. Unforntunately for me, I used a cross section for each piece across the fence rather than a straight cut along the lenght of the shelf. This resulted in pieces that are off a few thousands.
Someday I will fix it, but it’s been adaptable for me over the years.
The little compartments on the back of the fence make for a great little stowage spot too!

is the sheet mdf, or more like fiberboard? they had ones at lowes, and it didn’t seem like really dense stuff.
Also the top part of your with the laminate roundover.. was that part of the shelf too? i think i need to head to home depot instead.
