If any of you out there are like me you just cannot throw out hardwood scraps. I had a collection of newel post cutoffs I didn’t know what to do with so I made a bunch of wooden mallet heads. I cut the head shape, drilled out the hole and then cleaned it out with a chisel. The handle is scrap maple. The hole in the mallet head is tapered so that the handle drops in from the top and friction fits in. Thought I would throw the idea out there for and of you needing to make simple Christmas gifts for fellow wood workers. It has become an essential tool in my tool bag.

Nice save Jason. I have been thinking of a mallet run for gifts this year also.
