Every now and then you see something and say…...I would like to make that and before you know it you are in too far to stop! This was one of those projects.
This puzzle box is a design from a young guy in The Netherlands and the plans are available from his website and they are very well prepared. It is a challenge to make as it requires some accuracy in the making and plenty of patience to get all the parts sliding correctly.
The puzzle requires 65 moves to open (or close) the box and these must be done in the correct sequence. It uses a combination of sliders that allow the centre discs to be rotated to allow the next slider to be moved. What could be simpler than that?
The box was constructed from an Australian hardwood…..the main box is from Sydney Blue Gum that was machined to 5 mm thick. The sliders are Huon pine and the corners are made from some Blackwood that had a birds eye pattern throughout.
I have added the corners to give the box some bling and to hide the screws that were used in the assembly.
The plans are available here. http://www.bennoboxes.com/
There is also a You tube video from the original designer here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLBR5zgHo00

This will surely make a fine conversation piece. It’s the kind of thing that I would like to make but don’t have the time.

IF I could actually make one, I’d never be able to remember 65 moves in sequence to open it…

Beautiful work Ian, this is so intricate and must have been so difficult to achieve. My hat’s off to you.
