A friend of mine recently lost his father, and wanted something to remember him by. His dad cooked, was proud of his home state, and so this friend asked me to build him a cutting board in the shape of Iowa. So I took some maple and oak (his request) and cut out a shape of Iowa. I burned his father’s name on the back. At the last second, he requested a drip trough (personally, I think it looks stupid, but he was paying for it, so what do I care?).

I did a two-part video of it for You Tube:

An other guy from Iowa here …

Unless this cutting board is actually going to be used the trough was probably unnecessary. I would think a board like this would be more for display purposes than actual use.

The drip channel would be less obtrusive if it were shallower and wider.

When he requested it, I designed it with the understanding that it was for display purposes only. Had I known that perhaps he was going to actually use it (I’m not all that sure he is, but who knows?), I would have done end grain instead of doing it the way I did.

He sprung the idea of a trough on me after I had it glued and cut to shape, and I tried to explain to him that I didn’t have the tools necessary to carve the trough in the same shape as the state, and I sure as heck wasn’t going to try and free-hand it. This was what he said to do, so that’s what I did. He loves it, so I guess that’s a success. But, like I said, I think it looks odd to the point of being downright stupid, lol.

Besides our common names, I have bonds to Iowa as my wife is from there. Oh by the way your cutting board is well done.
