BYU Cutting Board

In 1906 the students at Brigham Young University had an ambitious plan to put the letters B Y and U up on the mountainside. They started with the Y and it took so much effort that the other two letters were abandoned and BYU has been nicknamed “The Y” ever since.

This cutting board also took a lot more effort than previous cutting boards I have made. It is all end grain and I had to cut, fit, glue, and trim it all one piece at a time. My attempts at keeping it all flat were valiant, but in the end it was too much to sand or scrape flat and I chose to build a flattening jig for my router screwed to my work bench.

In the end, I gave my cutting board to my son who is a freshman at BYU this year and it was well received. Let’s see if him remembers to oil it. Fun project, but not sure I want to start another one soon.

Woods are cherry, maple, and walnut (although I am not positive about the walnut). Overall size is about 12” x 15” by 1”+

Looks great! Having just done my first end grain cutting board, I now know how much work these are…and you have a bunch of challenging angles to get right and it sure looks like you did.

Turned out great, the only thing better would be if it was a U!

@phil7b7 I actually think a Utah cutting board could turn out pretty cool. If you use padauk and maple you could really have a red and white board.

@NDVermin – thanks I found that the disk sander was my friend and my block plane helped make everything right with the exterior corners.

I suppose you have another one with NOT on it!

Just kidding, a very nice nice cutting board. The color selection is exceptional.

aaron, that looks really sweet. After all that work, I hope you get to use it for a long long time.
