I recently finished a chess set for a friend, and this is the final product. Well, actually I took the pictures before I put felt on the bottom of the pieces, but it’s basically done at the point when these pictures were taken. The board is made of sugar maple and black walnut squares. The lighter wood along the border is curly maple and the dark small squares in the corners are black walnut. The pieces are black walnut and sugar maple. Everything is finished with shellac and I put felt underneath the board and pieces. Oh yeah, I also embedded some fishing weights into each piece to add some stability because the pieces are somewhat tall. I really like the heavier feel that the fishing weights add and I plan to do that every time I make a set. The squares are 1.5 inches each, and they can fit 4 bishops (which is what my chess friend said should be the correct size proportion). Oh yeah, there is an extra pawn for each side too. One last thing is that I burned nostrils and eyes for the knights on the white side. Thanks for looking!

excellent job. Love chess boards. Haven’t had the guts or time to make pieces yet.
