A friend of mine approached me with this project idea and I thought it sounded great. Check out our video of this build. This project is based on the article / plan at Mother Earth News. I made some changes to the plan to bring down the cost and make it easier to hang on the wall (French cleat).

The sustainability / homesteading movements are getting more popular and folks are looking for ways to store fruits and vegetables that they grow or get at their local farmers market. This is project is for those who live in the city / suburbs and (of course) probably don’t have a root cellar, yet want to enjoy the benefits of this old fashioned approach to storing fruits and vegetables. The concept reminds me of going with my granny down into her cellar to get a can of whatever for a meal she was cooking. It had such a great earthy smell!

Interesting project but what are the paint cans for?

Good question. From what I understand, you can fill those with sand (or maybe dirt?) and store carrots in there. They are supposed to last longer that way. I thought the whole thing sounded a little odd and not particularly useful until I read the article on Mother Earth News. Take a peek if you are curious.
