I made this little experiment by laminating 1/8” thick sycamore to 3/8” walnut. My thought was that routing the assembled box would reveal some of the walnut, creating an interesting visual effect. Dimensions are roughly 4.5” x 6.5” x 3.5” high. Finish is BLO, buffed out on the three wheel system.
Now for the quiz:
The horizontal inlay on the front of the box is more than just decorative. A free box of sawdust to the first lumberjock who can correctly identify its true function.

I am guessing you are hiding a drawer as I notice a thin line near the front in pic 6

nice finish!
I am going to hold off my guess until I know exactly what kind of sawdust I will be winning…

Nice try, Klaus, but no sawdust for you.
Sharon, I’ll saw up some Padauk if you like. That stuff puts the “dust” in sawdust.

The extension of corner splines maybe? Or maybe to reduce expansion stresses? The box is totally cool either way.

Beautiful grain showcased in the sycamore here, Charlie! I like Dan’s corner spline idea or maybe is it an integral inner tray support? Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful box. Maybe it’s a locking mechanism for the top??

Does it extend inside the box and serve as a support rail for a tray?

Thanks, but no winner yet.
Here is a hint: “Functional” in this case simply means it was not just put there as decoration. So why did I put it there?

It holds the top of the front to the bottom of the front so the front is the same height as the sides (you fixed an opps).

You were cutting off the top and flipped the box and cut the bottom?

Ding! ding! Ding! We have a winner!
I did it once years ago, and swore I’d never do it again.
Yeah, right. :-)

YAY! The sawdust gets delivered in this box…right?
Thanks for sharing your opps and ingenious fix, Charlie.
