Have been away from the lathe for a few years now. I have face plate and spindle turned in the past but never bowls. Was at our family reunion and my uncle had this spalted sycamore and the opportunity to try. The sycamore is finiky and wants to tear out on the end grain. Had a major mess up removing the bottom mounting foot. Just about had kindling!!! A good reminder about safety and the challengs that make woodworking so much fun and at times frustrating. It was fun and I plan on doing more when the time is available. Maybe this winter???? Thanks for looking.

Beautiful grain, beautiful finish. I’d say it was time you got back to the lathe.

I’ve worked with spalted sycamore and it has a very unusual pore structure that makes it hard to get a nice finish on. You did a great job.

Beautiful job and gorgeous wood. Just started turning a few months back and I love to look at bowls.

Very nice bowl. Now don’t go making stairs out of it…
