2015 Pinewood Derby Switchblade Car: I cannibalized parts from a cheap knife, belt clip, BSA Pinewood Derby car wood & wheel kit, brass shimstock, assorted screws, and some brass tacks to make this year’s car. I wanted something that would meet the official racing spec, look like a real knife without being dangerous, and make the boys jealous. Cars from other Scout Leaders are in that last picture. Many of them utterly violated the weight rules (leaders get to cheat in our Pack). My goals were partially met. Unfortunately, my wife’s Wookie Car was far more popular than mine. We don’t talk about it.

I really like your car and the competition between the adults.

Sorry, but I like the Wookie car

Wookie car looks like a furry turd. I think a pinewood derby for adults would be awesome. Nice project.

I like your Switchblade car! (And even though you dont talk about it, I also like the Wookie car)

Do the leaders get to just use any wood they want? I seem to recall back in my Scouting days we were handed a block of pine, approx. 2” X 4”, and that’s what we had to use.

Even us cheater leaders are supposed to use the wood from the BSA approved kit. I admit to using only some of the wood. I’m posting my Butcher Block car next – it used all sorts of wood other than pine.

Awesome cars! Kind of Mad Max vehicles.

It’s been 35+ years since I was in the scouts and all the pack leader’s cheated then too! :)

I’m glad to hear that there is a history of dirty rotten scoundrel cheating amongst leaders. One of our den fathers raced a 16 ounce behemoth… and won! We immediately disqualified him with much fanfare. He hasn’t forgiven us, yet. His kid’s car goes to the regional races every year – the guy’s got skill and his kid is definitely getting more sophisticated as he gets older.

I’m thinking about making a “Sabotage” car. My plan is to mount rare earth magnets to Nitinol wires and let the magnets grab the other cars’ axles as they pass me. If I cheat on my wheel placement, I might actually be able to beat the car(s) next to mine.

In my opinion, yours definitely looks more vicious which should be one of the qualifying attributes for such a race. Perhaps the reason the Wookie was far more popular is just because it had an additional coat. I know why you guys don’t talk about it – there isn’t anything to talk about. ;)
