After my first attempt at a jewelry box, I figured it was time for designing something myself… but what? “Ask and ye shall receive”. A co-worker had just redone her living room in a southwest style. The results were absolutely beautiful, except for one thing. She had one of those honking TV remotes that controls everything on her coffee table, and it stuck out like a sore thumb in the rustic decor.

I decided to design a simple box that would fit with her decorative style and allow her to stow away the remote. I had some nice cherry lying around as well as a long 1” x 1” strip of bubinga. Since I wanted to keep things very simple and blend the box in with her decor, I kept the joinery simple as well with butt joints. The strength of the side joints is actually provided by the legs that wrap around the corners. I used a sander to shape the legs in a gentle curve and to shape the lid lift. The hinges are simple brass nails with the heads cut off, and chased below the face of the sides.

I made two of these boxes and kept one to store the many clip-on bookmarks I make with leftover scraps to give as gifts.

As a remote control box mine would need a padlock to keep the 3 year old and the wife away from them…nice job.

great looking piece..

hint: to keep the wife away from the remote, explain that if she misses the tv she could start a fire.. or blow up the lamp.
