Chef Marc Lepine contacted me to make him 3 sandboxes for his restaurant Atelier in Ottawa. He told me the dimensions and after a few questions, he left the wood choice up to me but he wanted it to look ‘sharp’.

I had no idea why he wanted a sandbox for a restaurant but I just went with it. I decided that Spalted Maple would a wood with a bit of a WOW factor. Just prior to starting, he asked me to have a top that slides off.

1/2” Baltic Birch bottoms and 1/4” Baltic Birch tops with Walnut handles for sliding and to keep the 1/4” ply from bowing and getting stuck.

Finished with 4 coats of Poly.

He picked them up today and I had to ask him about them. Quite a concept but in the end, they will be used as serving trays for multi course meals with flights of fancy built in!

Nice work and I like the backstory.

Very interesting and nice trays.

I checked the restaurant a nd dinner is $110 probably Canadian and takes a couple hours. Out of my current price range but very reasonable for that kind of meal and Chef.

Have your say...
