I first saw this simple project in a video by Linn Orvar on YouTube. I wanted to make it and since I was hinted that we could use some coasters, I decided to crank it out between projects.

I used one of my drawer fronts that I rescued off the street. It’s not pine and I don’t see the usual greenish hue to the grain of poplar. Linn provides a printable template here. You’ll likely have to print it in two pieces and tape it together.

I cut it out with the bandsaw, rounded the top edges over slightly on the router table sanded them with a random orbit sander. I used a different stain on each piece, one piece being left plain, and then used spray lacquer to protect them. It was a very simple project, but fun.

Nice multifunctional job, Dave! Let us know how the lacquer holds up to the heat and moisture, please. Thanks for sharing.

I’m pretty sure the only heat these will see is a hot tea cup out of the microwave. We’re likely to use them only as coasters (mostly.)

Wonderful cocncept. With one project you cover various diameters of cups.
