Project Information

So all it took was my wife saying "maybe we should get new lamps"....Used some steam bending, some power tools, some hand tools and voila…3 lamps with the same shades and different bases. The inspiration for the shade was from Nakashima's lamps. I added some carved detailing to the uprights on the shade for textural interest. Most of the joinery is hand cut, with the exception of the segmented circles and rings used for the shades. The lamps are made from air dried local newfoundland birch and some kiln dried walnut. Hope you like them…..although, my wife likes them so thats probably all that matters!

I really like these lamps. Can you tell us what the translucent shade material is?

The screen material is a laminated shoji screen paper from eshoji.com. They have a nice selection but this one stood out to me. The random thread pattern is very pronounced and gives the shade some nice texture.

the shoji paper casts a beautiful glow. I find that traditional lamps provide good lighting but they usually cast a bright spot downwards and a bright spot on the ceiling. The lighting from these lamps is significantly different.
