I decided that I needed a new mallet to keep on my new bench for the holdfasts. I’ve wanted one of this design for a while, and with all of the hard maple scraps left over from building my bench it was the perfect time. It only took me two hours work and was pretty fun. I decided to leave the handle a bit rough with rasp marks, if I smoothed it out I would just have to cut a texture into it anyway, so I just left it.
The big thing here is not the finish quality but the construction. I had so much fun draw boring the tenons on my bench so much, I wanted to make the mallet to match. I went overkill here and put in four draw bore pins. The handle tenon goes all the way through the head and I just thought it looked cool. When I showed it to my wife, she said “Oh, Thor’s Hammer”. I guess she’s right.
