Just finished my very first guitar build ever. I made the body out of zebra wood with wenge accents. I didn’t make the neck but I’m going to try my hand at the neck on my next build. Doing the curves and contours were quite pleasing to do by hand, a very methodical practice. All it needs now is some pickups, strings, and some cavity covers which I’m going to make out of wenge to match the rest of the guitar.

I never realized guitars had 8 strings. I’ve seen 6 and 12 string guitars but not 8.
You did an really great job building it and I bet it sounds nice.
I would imagine it would be quite heavy because the Zebrawood and Wenge are dense woods.

the two top strings would be drone strings, I imagine.. open tunings would work, though I’m sure some have the talent to actually utilize all eight. Beautiful work.. I agree about the weight.. You’ll need a thick, padded wide leather guitar strap for this one. I’d love to hear it!

8 string guitars are often double stringed basses as well as used by Jazz and some classical players as well as pedal steel players

Looks great – thanks for sharing – would love to do one some day myself

This style of 8 string has two extra bass strings, typically used for playing heavier music lower.

Very well executed body, very well done for your first. Is that a Carvin neck? Building them isn’t all that hard, and is my favorite part. All I can say is welcome to the addiction. I’m on number 18 or something like that.

What type of finish did you use?

It’s actually no nearly as heavy as you would think, other similar bodies made of bass wood are only a hair lighter. I made the body a little under 1.5 inches thick to reduce weight. I just used a natural oil finish on it since that’s what my buddy wanted. Although I snuck in one super thin layer of a wiping varnish to give it just a tiny bit of sealant.
