A friend recently commissioned me to build him a studio easel. I am not an artist by any means and have never even used an easel let alone built one so I set out to find a decent build-it-yourself plan. I came across Charlie's project on this site and purchased the same plans he had used. His blog gave me some ideas and I added some modifications and features of my own.

My project is made of cherry, a little blondewood ply and finished with dewaxed shellac and poly. I thank Charlie for the inspiration for my weight carriage box as an improvement over the weights dangling from a bungee cord as called for in the plan.

The cherry appears in two different shades since I had some very old cherry that had been sitting in a barn for 30 years and had darkened considerably. I didn’t have enough for the whole project so I supplemented with some younger wood that hadn’t yet darkened.

The project took two weekends and two weeks of evenings in the shop.

Wonderful easel.
Any artist would love to work in front of that.

Sorry I got a bit behind in looking at my email notifications and missed this. I’m so glad that my easel build helped you with yours! I can tell you that USING the easel is a wonderful experience!

And the one(s) you built look like they turned out very well. The weight box modifications helps a TON!
