this is my first attempt at making a segmented bowl. as such, i wanted to practice on some lower cost wood. I used red oak for the bottom and poplar for the remaining layers. there are 8 segments in each ring and the top of the bowl is 11 inches across. I finished it with tung oil.

I also learn a few lessons while making this. I need to get a better table for my disc sander. and using a solid single piece for the bottom is a pain in the bottom. it looks good but it is tough to turn. jam chucks, are not that easy to use.

I am happy with the outcome and will be making more bowls, I am thinking maybe something dark.

Good work on your first segmented turning. It’s very addictive.

You’ve gotta be pleased with this as your 1st attempt at segmented work, I have been turning for many years but not game enough to have a go at this stuff, just a wee thought with your photos, try & find a spot just out of the sun & it won’t swamp hard your work, don’t take this as a criticism of your work, lets see some more :)
