I made these from a wood magazine plan as others have in the past. See Chuck M and BreakingBoardom.

The card holders are made essentially the same as the directions except for Chuck’s suggestion to laminate the hinges from 3 pieces. I think they would have looked better with more figured woods with smaller/tighter grain patterns, but I used what I had on hand.

All four use the same wood for the larger components (not sure what it is?). Two of them have walnut for the contrasting trim parts and the other two have a lighter wood (alder, maple, ?).

The finish is three coats of WDO with 72+ hours drying in between each coat.

I completely changed careers in 2011 and the first place I worked (2012-2014) was pretty awful. However, I moved my family to take a new job in late March of 2014 and the new employer has been a 100% improvement. I made the four card holders as a thank you for the four people with whom I work closest.

My shop time is limited because I work six days most weeks and my wife and I have a 2 year old, but even I finish some projects every once in a while.

Here are a few shots just after the first coat of WDO was applied:

Nice looking card holders. Thanks for posting.

I would really appreciate seeing a photo with the cards in/on them. I am not sure how they actually work.

Thanks again.

Pictures from original article:

They can be carried on your person.

Or, can be folded over and left on a desk as a static display.
