This is a simple step stool I put together for my wife from scrap lumber that was left in the shed of a house we moved into. It had high cupboards, so she needed something to be able to reach the top shelves.

Alexr,

Does the 1’ 3” cross piece belong under the lower step and made longer so it supports the inside edge of the lower step?

Yeah, and I was working with some scrap wood that was cut in random sizes. So, it was kind of fun designing something without doing a lot of cutting (though I did do some).
