This is my latest box design made from rosewood and maple that a buddy gave me and black leather .
The design is based on the 1832 design which I recently posted but is enhanced with the raised leather panels and the beautiful rosewood but by changing the lid design and adding the leather panels I was able to archive a totally different look .
The hinges are solid brass and the tray and top and bottom liners are a deep brown velvet cloth sown to backing material .
The size is 13” x7” x4 1/2” and its finished with bees wax and oil mixture to a low sheen .
It was a real pleasure working with the rosewood even so the board had a lot of stress and was just over 1/2” thick and just enough to complete this box .
The front ,back and side panels where made using my pyramid cutting jig .
and of course the box clamping jig did it’s thing giving me a perfectly rectangular box.
I think my buddy that gave me the wood will be pleased when I present the box to him .
I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think of this design .

Very elegant Klaus. I really like the raised leather panels. May need to ask you a little on how you went about it.

Klaus, I have to agree with Dave’s comments. Should I assume that your next embellishment will be to include carved leather? As soon as I saw this, I started to get the urge to unpack my leather tools.

Klaus, That is a beautiful box. It’s as if you just see something in your mind and you can build it. The is the mark of an artist and master level skill.

I just had a thought about your woodworking and I understand how you are able to do it to some extent.
I have played fiddle for 40+ years. When I will hear something in my mind it translates to instant music. When I improvise up on stage people are seeing and hearing the creation of music. I’m not trying to say I’m a master, I’m merely competent at the fiddle.

With your speed and stunning craftsmanship, I see a correlation.

BTW. Thanks for the links. I love the pyramid effect. Now I have to go read up on it and figure out how you did it so perfectly without tear out.

Klaus, another beautiful box. The leather inserts look great and are a nice addition. I made box clamping jig like yours and they worked great on my last boxes.

Thanks Dave
Yes the leather panels sure add to the box and leather is one material that I have always liked .

Thanks John
I have never carved leather but did some lino carving a long time ago but carved leather sounds like something interesting to include in a box design and I will ask you for advice when the time comes .

Thanks Peter.
Nice to hear you made that box clamping jig also and it worked well for you .
I wish you would post it to get the others to copy it because I think it is the best jig I ever designed and would help others with getting frustrated clamping a box nice and square .

Thanks Mark
I appreciate your comment and can relate to what you are saying about you and music .
I am not talented with music but I love listening to anything from classical to modern and have my favorites but can seldom say who is playing it .
As far as working with wood and creating something like this box don’t ask how ,I just build it with no plan and more or less the material available dictates the result .
My line is It just came of the saw that way .

Nice box, and you excicuted the design wonderfully. The leather and pyramids are the 1st I’ve seen. I’d be interested in seeing this box clamping jig as well. A box that is out of square can be a nightmare to build trays and drawers for.

Good Lord, this is the most visually amazing effect I have ever seen!!!
It’s hard to stop looking at. Reminds me of the Ark of The Covenant.
