This was a project between projects this past weekend. While other things were drying I occupied myself by making this. It is of solid cypress, stained dark walnut and the stripes were just painted while it was on the lathe. I wood burned the lines and used small strips of pine I shaped to match the curves to make the laces. BUT, guess the wood was a little wetter than I thought because as you can see in the second picture, it did split after I was finished. Oh well, it was fun anyway and the split is not visible when it it is sitting on my desk!!

That split adds to the character. If it was perfect it wouldn’t look handmade.

I remember a football from my childhood days that split like that!

You did a great job on it even with the slight malfunction.
